Coinciding with the digitalization of images, large-capacity optical discs capable of recording impressive high-quality images for long periods of time have become popular. One of the materials used in the manufacture of these cutting-edge optical discs is the Teijin Group's Panlite®, the first polycarbonate resin commercialized in Japan.

Following the application of Panlite® in the world's first CDs during the 1980s, it has been used continuously in optical discs, which have evolved into DVDs and Blu-ray discs. The reason is that Panlite® for optical discs has highly precise transcription performance, clearly reflecting the Teijin Group's strength in materials development.

The recording capacity of an optical disc is based on the size of the pits where the data is stored. As the disc substrate made using Panelite® allows the pit shape to be transcribed precisely at the nanometer level, the recording capacity can be increased without changing the size of the substrate. Additionally, Panelite® maintains the characteristics required of optical discs for a long time, thereby contributing to the highly reliable long-term storage of audio/visual data, from personal information to cultural assets.

What Is Polycarbonate Resin?

Polycarbonate resin has over 200 times the impact resistance of glass while weighing only half as much. It also has excellent heat resistance, transparency, weatherability and workability.

In addition to optical discs, it is used in a wide range of applications including the exterior materials of mobile phones, laptop computers and other information-communications, audio/visual and office automation equipment, as well as in automotive components such as headlights.
