A Leader in the Market for Polyester Films

The Teijin Group has integrated basic and processing technologies acquired from E.I. du Pont de Nemours and Company (DuPont) of the United States and ICI of the United Kingdom—developers of the first polyester films 50 years ago—with our own DNA, that is, our unique polymerization and product development technologies. This has yielded outstanding technological capabilities and the world's largest production capacity for polyester films, comprising polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polyethylene naphthalate (PEN).

An Evolving Business

The market for films as an essential material in advanced industries is expected to continue exhibiting stable growth. The outstanding advantages of PET film are demonstrated in such applications as electronics and environment-friendly packaging materials.

PEN film developed by Teijin boasts of superior characteristics including heat resistance and high strength, and in addition to the steadily expanding application of PEN film in high density data storage tapes because of the high performance that is exhibited, the use of PEN film is also expanding into advanced industrial applications and electronic material applications.

Innovation for Growth

Recognizing that the source of competitiveness and growth is in comprehensive, global market development and R&D, we promote the development of new products and technologies at our R&D sites in Japan, the United States and Europe, in line with a policy we call "Innovation for Growth." Our efforts— spearheaded by Group R&D centers—are targeted at understanding market needs, enhancing the R&D pipeline, accelerating development and reorganizing our production network through the integration of facilities, thereby speeding the launch of new products. Additionally, we are focusing efforts on products for such growth markets as liquid crystal, plasma and other flat panel displays (FPDs), as well as for automotive applications. We are also striving to expand applications in solar batteries, fuel cells and other environment- and energy-related fields in which technologies are advancing.

Outline of Operations

PET Film

An essential element in many industries, PET film has broad applications in the electronics, industrial, packaging and magnetic recording materials fields. Demand is rising sharply for applications in such sectors as liquid crystal display (LCD) materials, digital electronics materials, medical products and automotive- and energy-related products.

PEN Film

A proprietary product, PEN film is a well-balanced, high-performance film that boasts greater strength, heat resistance and antihydrolysis properties than PET film. PEN film's outstanding performance and reliability have prompted an increase in demand over recent years for use in high-density data backup tapes, while demand is also expected to expand for use in advanced industrial and electronics applications, including automotive electronics, photographic and radiology film and other electronics applications.

Processed Film

Processed films are manufactured using proprietary chemical and nanostructure control technologies, as well as superior coating technologies. These films are used extensively in FPDs, digital electronics materials, semiconductors and medical materials, and are expected to see considerable growth in the future.
