Maximizing Synergies between Pharmaceuticals and Home Health Care
The Teijin Group focuses on three key therapeutic areas—bone and joint disease, respiratory disease, and cardiovascular and metabolic disease—and approaches these areas from the twin perspectives of pharmaceuticals and home health care. The ability to maximize synergies between these two businesses gives the Teijin Group an advantage over other pharmaceuticals manufacturers.
Promoting Global Expansion
To date, we have concentrated primarily on the Japanese market. However, to ensure ongoing, robust growth over the long term in our pharmaceuticals and health care businesses, we recognize that it is essential to secure pharmaceuticals with currency in global markets. Accordingly, we will continue to strengthen our in-house R&D capabilities, as well as capitalize on attractive M&A opportunities; form comprehensive, strategic alliances through licensing agreements; and invest resources in new ethical drug discovery ventures.
Aiming for Progressive, Sustainable Growth
Going forward, we will step up strategic efforts to enhance our pharmaceuticals sales capabilities, led by our team of 700 medical representatives (MRs), as well as to integrate pharmaceuticals and home health care service offices.
We currently market a variety of pharmaceuticals in several dozen countries overseas. We have positioned major new ethical drug TMX-67, a treatment for gout and hyperuricemia, as a major strategic product for global markets and we intend to actively market the drug in the United States, Europe and Asia.
We have already taken steps to reinforce the foundations of our pharmaceuticals and home health care businesses overseas. These include establishing a pharmaceuticals sales office in Shanghai, in the PRC, and a home health care joint venture in the Republic of Korea (ROK), as well as acquiring two home health care services providers in the United States to establish a sales network to cover most of the United States. In Europe, a home health care joint venture will be established in Spain, from which base we will expand our business to other countries in the region.
Drug discovery efforts are spearheaded by our R&D facilities in Japan, the United States and Europe, which work together to develop superior new products. At the same time, we are also promoting collaborative research with external research organizations and other companies.

Outline of Operations
Pharmaceuticals
Leading Domestic Market Share in Three Therapeutic Areas
The Teijin Group's pharmaceuticals operations currently encompass leading ethical drugs in the areas of bone and joint disease, respiratory disease, and cardiovascular and metabolic disease. These include "Bonalon" and" Onealfa", both treatments for osteoporosis; "Mucosolvan", a mucolubricant used as an expectorant; and "Tricor", a drug for hyperlipidemia. Drugs in other areas include "Venilon". All of these drugs are among the top few in their respective areas in terms of market share. To ensure early market penetration for new drugs, we are working to reinforce our sales capabilities, led by our team of 700 MRs, and to increase productivity.
Tripolar R&D Network

Teijin Biomedical Laboratory
Medical Research Council, London
Our R&D network encompasses four facilities in Japan; the Teijin Biomedical Laboratory Medical Research Council in the United Kingdom, which conducts cutting-edge research in the area of genome-based drug discovery; and Teijin America, Inc., in the United States, which conducts clinical development. This tripolar network positions us to identify latent market needs. We also dispatch between 10 and 20 researchers to advanced research organizations in Japan and overseas each year with the aim of cultivating research seeds and training globally recognized researchers.
Home Health Care
A Comprehensive Home Health Care Services Provider
We provide inclusive home health care services that encompass the development, production, rental and maintenance of home health care equipment. In Japan, we have created a nationwide home health care network of approximately 80 offices staffed by dedicated professionals, through which we provide round-the-clock, comprehensive follow-up services.
A Leader in the Domestic Market for HOT Devices
The core of our home oxygen therapy (HOT) devices lineup is the" Hi-Sanso" series of therapeutic oxygen concentrators for patients suffering from chronic respiratory failure caused by, for example, pulmonary emphysema. These products enjoy an overwhelming share of this important market. We also offer continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) ventilators, used to treat sleep apnea syndrome (SAS), and "SAFHS" (Sonic Accelerated Fracture Healing System), the first treatment device in Japan for severe bone fractures to use pulsed ultrasound.
