Polycarbonate resin, which was first commercialized in Japan by Teijin Chemicals, is the favored material for high-end DVDs, Blu-ray Discs—a next-generation optical disc format—and other applications requiring high levels of performance and quality. The Teijin Group is leveraging the competitive advantage it enjoys as a pioneer in this business.
Promoting R&D to Capitalize on Growth in Key Areas
In addition to our mainstay polycarbonate resin for optical discs, we also supply products for use in a wide range of industries, including electrical and electronics equipment, office automation (OA) equipment and automobiles. With demand for electrical and electronics equipment and OA equipment expected to grow sharply, particularly in the People's Republic of China (PRC), we are making decisive investments to expand our capabilities in this area.
In polycarbonate resin for optical applications, we are promoting R&D with an emphasis on products for use in liquid crystal displays (LCDs) and next-generation optical discs, as well as for such promising applications as vehicle windows and sunroofs.
We are also focusing efforts on environment-related areas. Having developed and commercialized the world's first chemical recycling technology for PET bottles, whereby bottles are chemically decomposed and converted into raw materials for polyethylene terephthalate (PET) resin, we are currently working to commercialize a similar technology for polycarbonate resin.

By concentrating production of polycarbonate resin in Asia, the principal growth market for this product, we will strive to establish a solid operating foundation, thereby maintaining our leading market share. We will also strengthen our processed polycarbonate resins business, which comprises resin sheets and resin film, with the aim of realizing a business structure that is responsive to changes in the operating environment and advancing the development of new technologies.

Products for Extensive Applications
Boasting an impact resistance 200 times that of glass and only half the weight, polycarbonate resin is the world's most commonly used engineering plastic. In addition to these properties, polycarbonate resin is valued for its excellent heat resistance, weatherability, transparency, heat retention and the ease with which it can be processed.
Teijin Chemicals' polycarbonate resin lineup includes "Panlite", the outstanding quality of which has made it the unassailable leader in the global market for polycarbonate resins used in optical discs. "Panlite" is also compounded with glass fiber, or with other resins, to produce a variety of materials with a number of added functions. These materials are used in the casings of mobile phones, laptop computers and other information and communications equipment, as well as in audiovisual (AV) and OA equipment.
Our polycarbonate resin lineup also includes products for a wide range of applications. These include "Panlite" sheet for large-screen LCD TVs, clear electroconductive film "ELECLEAR" for touch panels, and "PURE-ACE", used in, among others, LCD displays for mobile phones and car navigation systems.
Recycling Technology: Contributing to Environmental Preservation
A noted producer of PET resin, the Teijin Group has developed the world's first chemical recycling technology for PET bottles. With this technology, recovered PET bottles are chemically decomposed and converted into PET resin raw materials of comparable purity to those derived from petroleum. We are also working to apply our accumulated technologies to the development and implementation of a practical recycling scheme for polycarbonate resin, thereby helping to preserve the global environment.
PEN Resin
The Teijin Group also produces polyethylene naphthalate (PEN) resin, which surpasses PET resin in terms of heat resistance, hygiene level and gas barrier properties. PEN resin is attracting increasing attention for use in a wide range of applications, including cosmetics containers, school lunch dishware and pharmaceuticals containers.
