Harmony with Global Environment by promoting "Sustainable Environment Initiatives"
The Teijin Group's operations affect the environment in various ways: handling of chemical substances in manufacturing and processing, usage of energy such as fuel, consumption of water, treatment of waste generated and other impacts.
In accordance with our corporate philosophy, we have drawn up the Teijin Group Global Environmental Charter to reduce the impacts to the environment, and will promote Sustainable Environment Initiatives from the three-way perspective of Environmental Preservation, Environmentally Friendly Design and Environmental Business to harmonize with the global environment.
The first is Environmental Preservation, which refers to a general approach to activities designed to reduce the environmental impact of day-to-day operational processes, by setting the longterm targets for reducing CO2 emissions leading to the global warming issue, reducing the discharge of chemical substances and promoting efficient use of waste.
The second element is Design for Environment, which refers to efforts to incorporate reductions in the environmental impact of products and processes throughout their lifecycles, from procurement to production, distribution, consumption and disposal, into their design.
We evaluated our existing eco-products on the basis of the new guidelines. As a result, 20 series of products and one manufacturing process were found to meet the rating criteria, and were approved for the design for environment. We are also promoting activities to formalize the guidelines and increase the number of product and process approved.
The third core element is Environmental Business, which refers to a business that aims to contribute to environmental remediation and improvement. We intend to capitalize on our strengths as a company in order to generate distinctive new lines of business in these areas.
We will promote our activities in the three core elements on a comprehensive, ongoing basis. Each member of the Teijin Group will develop a greater understanding of the global environment and contribute to create the sustainable society.
We held the 1st Teijin Group "Environmental Forum" in September 2008, as part of our activities to promote participatory environmental communication. The forum took place concurrently at nine sites throughout Japan connected via the Internet, with the participation of about 900 of our executives and employees. Following the reports of three pioneering efforts on environment, the alpinist Ken Noguchi was invited as a guest speaker. All the electric power consumed at the venue was supplied by "Green Electricity" (wind turbine generation). The Teijin Group will continue to hold environmental forums annually.
